Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid

· Industry Updates

The brochure for the new Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid has been released by UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT), providing us a thorough look at what car purchasers will get ahead of the model's formal launch on 14 Jan 2022. The hybrid SUV is expected to cost RM124,000 without insurance on the road. The new hybrid model (1.8 Hybrid), as well as the existing petrol-only options (1.8V and 1.8G) that were previously wholly imported (CBU) from Thailand, will be locally constructed (CKD) in Malaysia.

Colour & Warranty

The 1.8 Hybrid is available in five colours: Red Mica Metallic, Nebula Blue Metallic, Platinum White Pearl, Silver Metallic, and an exclusive Celestite Grey Metallic. It comes with a five-year car warranty and unlimited mileage.

Engine

The Corolla Cross Hybrid is powered by a 2ZR-FXE 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder petrol engine with 98 PS and 142 Nm of torque at 3,600 rpm. The mill works with an electric motor rated at 72 PS and 163 Nm, generating a total system output of 122 PS, which is transmitted to the front wheels through an e-CVT.

According to UMWT, the fuel consumption is 23.3 km/l.A 2ZR-FXE 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder petrol engine with 98 PS and 142 Nm of torque at 3,600 rpm powers the Corolla Cross Hybrid. The fuel consumption is 23.3 km/l, according to UMWT.

Better acceleration times are also advertised, with the sprint from 0-50 km/h taking 2.1 seconds less than petrol-only vehicles, 1.7 seconds less from 0-80 km/h, and 0.9 seconds less from 0-100 km/h.

Battery

Toyota used its proven expertise and experience in producing Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) worldwide to develop a more resilient 4th Generation Hybrid battery. The battery and the remainder of the hybrid system (inverter and power management control unit) are covered by an eight-year, unlimited-mileage guarantee, according to the manufacturer.

Exterior

The new hybrid Corolla Cross looks like any other Corolla Cross, with a few small differences to distinguish it from the gasoline-only models. These feature "Hybrid" badging on the fenders and tailgate, as well as blue accents on the Toyota emblems and bi-LED headlamps.

The 1.8 Hybrid, however, adds dual-zone climate control (the 1.8V and 1.8G only have single-zone) and an electrochromic rear-view mirror to the 1.8V. Optional extras such as a rear DVR and wireless charging (placed in the compartment front of the gear lever) remain.

Interior

The blue engine start button, unique floor mats, and updated controls to engage EV-only mode and cycle through the six drive modes are prominent hybrid accents on the interior. In comparison to the 4.2-inch device in petrol-only variants, the instrument cluster has a larger seven-inch screen with hybrid-specific displays (MID). Drive mode switch & EV mode are switchable while ECO mode maximises fuel efficiency and Sport mode offers a more responsive acceleration, EV mode provides silent drives with zero emissions.

A nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, six speakers, black leather upholstery, an eight-way power driver's seat, rear air vents, keyless entry and start, a panoramic view monitor (PVM), the Vehicle Telematics System (VTS), security and solar film, and a front digital video recorder are among the additional features (DVR). Nonetheless, the first batch of CKD cars will have USB-A rear ports, but from February onwards, this will be replaced by USB-C. Nevertheless, it gives you the full 440L capacity uncompromised due to the reason that the hybrid cattery was being repositioned.

Chassis

It is 225/50. Toyo Proxes CR1 tyres are new as part of the localization process, and are said to provide superior performance, fuel efficiency, and refinement than the Michelin Primacy 4 rubbers used on prior CBU automobiles.

Security

The 1.8 Hybrid gets the Toyota Safety Sense suite, which includes a pre-collision system (automatic emergency braking), lane departure alert with steering help, dynamic radar cruise control, and lane tracing assist, as well as the 1.8V's Toyota Safety Sense suite.

Seven airbags, VSC, traction control, hill start assist, a tyre pressure warning system, ABS, EBD, brake assist, Isofix child seat anchors, six parking sensors (two front and four rear), automatic high beam, a blind spot monitor, and rear cross traffic alert (RCTA) are standard on all Corolla Cross models. The hybrid battery was relocated, allowing for a lower centre of gravity which translates to better drivability.
